Received a notification that someone reacted to your status and wondered where to see it? The reaction is stored in two places: in the list of people who viewed your status and also as a message in the conversation with that person. Below is the exact path to find it, to react to other people's statuses, and to understand why sometimes the reaction simply disappears.

How to react to a WhatsApp status in seconds.

Reacting to a status update works similarly to reacting to a regular message, except the gesture is different: instead of holding your finger down, you swipe upwards.

  1. Open the tab Updates (in older versions it is called Status).
  2. Tap on the person's status to open it.
  3. Slide your finger from bottom to top. On the screen. A row of emojis will appear.
  4. Tap the emoji you want. That's it, the reaction has been sent.

If you prefer, you can tap directly on the emoji icon located at the bottom of the screen, next to the response field — the effect is the same.

There are eight emojis available by default. If none of them work, tap the checkmark. + Next to the row, open the full keyboard and choose any other option.

And what about WhatsApp Web?

On a computer, the process is even more straightforward: open the status and click the emoji icon below the image. There's no swipe gesture, just click.

How to see who reacted to your status

This is the part that generates the most confusion, because the reaction doesn't appear on top of the photo for everyone to see. Only you, the owner of the status, can see it.

  1. Open the tab Updates and tap on your own status.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom or tap the icon. eye in the bottom left corner.
  3. It will open the list of who viewed it. Those who reacted will appear with the emoji next to the name.

Furthermore, the reaction reaches you as a message in the conversation with that person, with a thumbnail of the status they reacted to. In other words: even if you lose the list, the record remains in the chat.

The detail that almost nobody knows

If you Disabled read receipts. (That setting in Settings → Privacy) prevents you from seeing who has viewed your status. It's a trade-off: you become invisible on other people's lists, but you lose your own as well.

However, reactions continue to arrive via chat. So even with the receipt disabled, you still know who reacted—you just don't see the complete list of views.

Why did the reaction to the status disappear?

If you had a reaction and it disappeared, it's almost always due to one of these reasons:

  • The status has expired. Status updates last 24 hours. After that, the status disappears, along with the list of views and reactions. The message in the chat remains, but without the thumbnail.
  • The person deleted their status. If the author deletes the file before 24 hours, everything linked to it disappears.
  • The person removed the reaction. Simply open the status again and tap the same emoji to undo.
  • Privacy restrictions. You can only react to the status of the person you can message. If both parties are blocked, the button won't even appear.
  • Outdated app. The reaction function requires a recent version. It's worth checking for updates in the store.

Who can see your reaction?

This is a legitimate concern, and the answer is simple: only the owner of the status. No other contact sees that you reacted, not even mutual friends.

Unlike Instagram, where some interactions are visible to third parties, WhatsApp status reactions are a communication between two people. They appear in a private chat and remain there.

Reacting without the other person knowing: is it possible or not?

It's not possible — and it's important to make that clear instead of selling illusions. Reacting, by definition, means sending a warning to the author. There is no such thing as an anonymous reaction, and no third-party app delivers that.

The truth is the opposite: View the status without appearing as a viewer., Disabling read receipts before opening. But then you just watch; if you react, the notification is sent normally.

A practical warning: apps that promise to "see secret reactions" or "discover who hid their status from you" can't do that, because WhatsApp simply doesn't expose that data. Many require you to log in with your number, and then you risk losing your account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I react with any emoji?

Yes. The eight in the row are shortcuts, but the button + Unlock the entire emoji keyboard.

Is the person notified when I remove the reaction?

No new notification arrives. The message disappears from the conversation and the emoji silently vanishes from the list of viewed messages.

Why doesn't the option to react appear in some statuses?

Usually because it's a restricted channel or business account status, because there's a block between you, or because the app is outdated.

Can you tell who reacted after 24 hours?

The list isn't gone. But the reactions that arrived as messages remain in the conversation with each person, so the record isn't completely lost.

In short

To react, swipe up on the status and choose the emoji. To see who reacted to yours, open your own status and look at the list of views—with the emoji next to each name—or simply check the conversation, because the reaction also arrives as a message.

And if it disappears, most of the time it's just the clock: status lives 24 hours a day and takes everything away when it expires.
